Only easy-access accounts: you can take your money out at any time. The rate is the base rate plus the fidelity premium. The interest is what you keep after withholding tax, if the money stays 12 months. Welcome rates count for the months you get them. One account per bank: the one that pays the most.
Good to know as an expat
- Most Belgian banks ask for a Belgian address and an identity document. You get a residence card when you register with your municipality.
- If you pay tax in Belgium, the tax-free €1,020 of interest on a regulated savings account is for you too.
- The fidelity premium is paid only on money that stays in the account for 12 months in a row. The list counts it, so it assumes you leave the money for a year.
- The deposit guarantee covers € 100,000 per person per bank. It does not depend on your nationality.
Frequently asked questions
Which savings account is best for expats?
With €25,000, Trade Republic pays the most now: you keep €525.00 after tax in the first year, on the Rente op je geldrekening.
Do expats get a lower rate?
No. The rate depends on the account and your balance, not on where you are from.
Do I pay tax on the interest?
On a regulated savings account, the first €1,020 of interest per person per year is tax-free. Above that, the bank withholds 15%. On an account that is not regulated, the bank withholds 30% from the first euro. The amounts on this page are after tax.
Are my savings safe?
Yes, up to € 100,000 per person per bank. Every bank on this page is covered by a deposit guarantee scheme. If a bank fails, the scheme pays your savings back up to that amount.
